Shannon Point
I enjoyed our trip to Shannon Point immensely. Learning
about marine life transformed completely when you are experiencing and viewing
it for the first time. I loved being on the boat that was the coolest part of
the trip. I only took pictures in the lab and then my phone died. I don’t think visiting Shannon Point changed
by views, but definitely solidified my beliefs that we need to take care of our
shores and oceans.
Sea cucumber- we saw the sea cucumber in the laboratory. It
wasn’t doing much just chilling in the tank. We learned how sea cucumbers feed
on debris within their habitat. They act as a garage disposal within the ocean.
Sea Star- we also saw the sea star in the laboratory. I
noticed all the tentacles.
Crab – we saw this when we visited the tide pools. Gwen
pointed it out and talked about the sex of the crab. This crab was female. Gwen
passed it to another student and then it ran away. We also saw some crabs on
the boat. The one on the boat was a dungress crab. We counted the crabs and all
the other fish that we caught in the net.
Sea pen- we saw this in the lab. Sea pens are subtidal and
get washed up often on the beaches.
Piper fish- we saw this on the boat. Nate pointed it out. He
told me how it is related to sea horse and that is why it has a little sea
horse typeface.
Questions:
What fish (besides clownfish) live in anemones? I only know that because of Finding Nemo.
Hi Katherine,
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoyed this trip too because it really gave me a chance to learn about the organisms in our area that we do not hear about often due to the fact that they live in and under the water. I agree that being on the boat was really cool experience, especially the fact that we got to pull up and see what was at the bottom of the ocean with the special tools we had.
