Blog Post #9: Shannon Point

The most interesting part of the field trip to me was the boat ride. It was really fun being able to look at a large diversity of sea organisms up close. The organisms I took pictures of came from the boat and laboratory. I didn't really find anything along the beach so that was a little bit of a let down but it was still a great experience. The two crabs I took pictures of we found on the boat. The cancer crab was kind of just chillin on the bottom of the bucket and the decorator crab was mixed up with all of the seaweed. It seemed as if they were just trying to hide which I don't blame them for. The sea urchin was in a little enclosure outside of the lab along the wall of the tank. It's a sea urchin so it really wasn't doing a whole lot. The sea pen was in a little tray in the lab and like the sea urchin, wasn't really doing a whole lot. The roles that the two crabs most likely play is keeping certain species build-up down like clams and mussels. Sea urchins most likely keep the algae in check so it doesn't get too out of hand. I'm not really sure what a sea pen would do for the ecosystem, most likely play a role as some type of major food source. The most interesting thing I saw on the trip was the little zooplankton in the lab, sadly I could not get a very clear picture of one. I learned that a lot of populations in the Pacific Northwest are dwindling more so than I thought. The only question I really have is what DOES the sea pen do! It looks really cool but its hard to see what the point of one is.
