Abbey View Memorial Park. It's a fairly nice place in Brier that, after you get past the cemetery part, actually has some fairly scenic areas to it on the trail that leads up to this lake. Most of the trail was a fairly foresty kind of setting. Containing a few different pines and cedars along the route as well as a bunch of blackberries that are slowly beginning to  die off a little bit. Heading towards the lake, it's possible to see a few squirrels along the way and at the lake. There were a few ducks there. The waters generally contained a few lily pads near the shore, and there was that one odd maple just standing there hugging the forest while looking over the lake. I only saw one tree with a cavity in it, but then again I might not have been looking hard enough on that one.

The organism I found was a Grass Leaved Pond Weed Potamogeton Gramineus. While normally an aquatic species, the lake had actually dried out a little bit over the summer revealing what was underneath. It was fairly dispersed throughout the entire transect, though there were a few parts that show none of the organism whereas some other part had shown multiple of them. I feel like there should also be more but it was a little muddy and I have a feeling that some of it may just be covered in mud. But another thing I noticed is that there tended to be a bit more the farther away from the foresty area you go. Probably because this is an aquatic species. This kind of sampling shows that the these kinds of organisms usually only grow in water and while the lake had dried away, it tends to stay where the water used to be.

In using this for endangered species, It could help determine how much of the species is remaining.

  1. Hi Maya! I have never been to Abbey View Memorial Park before, but it looks like a nice place to go for a short, quiet walk. I have seen the organism you examined before; however, I never knew the name. So that was cool to learn about.

  2. Nice job! I have never been to that park either. Why did you decide on that organism as your focus?
